Charles Dickens Museum

Head of Commercial and Marketing

£45,000 - £47,000/yr
The Charles Dickens Museum is seeking an exceptional person to fill a key position within a small dynamic team. As part of the Senior Management Team this role is both strategic and operational, leading on all aspects of commercial income generation and marketing.

Job Description

  • Commercial: Deliver annual commercial plans, grow retail and tearoom profitability, develop brand licensing, manage e-commerce, and expand venue hire opportunities.
  • Visitor Services & Operations: Set customer service standards, oversee IT systems (EPOS, ticketing, e-commerce), ensure health & safety compliance, and act as Premises Licence Holder.
  • Marketing & Communications: Implement marketing strategy, manage press and media relations, oversee website and social media, and use analytics to boost engagement.
  • Events: Curate and deliver a commercial events programme aligned with museum themes.
  • Strategy & Management: Contribute to strategic planning, manage budgets, lead HR processes for your team, and report to the Board.

We’re looking for someone with strong commercial acumen, leadership experience, and a passion for cultural engagement.

Job Requirements

Essential:

  • Significant experience leading commercial and visitor operations.
  • Strong commercial acumen and proven income growth strategies.
  • Budgeting, forecasting, and pricing expertise.
  • Strategic thinker with leadership and HR experience.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and IT/digital skills (EPOS, e-commerce, analytics).
  • Audience development and marketing experience.
  • Flexible approach, including evenings/weekends during peak season.

Desirable:

  • Cultural/charity sector experience.
  • Knowledge of DigiTickets, EPOS, Shopify.

The Charles Dickens Museum is an author's house museum at 48 Doughty Street in King's Cross, in the London Borough of Camden. It occupies a typical Georgian terraced house which was Charles Dickens's home from 25 March 1837 to December 1839.
